Enhancing Training as a means of resilience in disaster management

The Department of Chemistry is set to co-organize together with ELINYAE and with the support of SCN the final Conference of the SETOFF PROJECT on November 1-2, 2024, in Thessaloniki, Greece. The conference will be a hybrid event, offering both in-person attendance and online participation options. The hybrid conference, that will be held in Greek language, envisions bringing together government officials, members of the academic community, non–government personnel, environmentalists, and other stakeholders on dealing with disaster preparedness; disaster response; disaster rehabilitation and recovery; disaster prevention and mitigation; training and education in crisis and disaster management.

More specifically, it is aimed to attain the following objectives:

Enhance community resilience through proactive measures and effective planning to mitigate risks and improve disaster preparedness strategies

Explore innovative approaches and lessons learned in swift and efficient disaster response, emphasizing coordination, resource management, and effective crisis intervention methodologies

Delve into best practices and strategies for post-disaster recovery efforts, emphasizing community empowerment, infrastructure restoration, and long-term rehabilitation plans.

Identify and implement proactive measures to reduce risks, strengthen infrastructure, and foster resilience in vulnerable areas

Discuss advancements in disaster management education and training methodologies, focusing on capacity-building initiatives, skill development, and knowledge dissemination for effective disaster management practices.

The SETOFF Project is dedicated to enhancing the preparedness and occupational safety of civil protection and private sector Safety and Security Personnel in anticipation of future crises and emergencies. It aims to achieve this by crafting an innovative e-training curriculum rooted in a successfully tested simulation model, incorporating the latest scientific knowledge, and drawing insights from comprehensive needs analyses.

Objectives:

Deliver high-quality training to civil protection and private sector Safety and Security personnel, enhancing their readiness and responsiveness.

Validate and bolster professionals’ practices acquired in real-life scenarios.

Identify knowledge and performance gaps via extensive training needs assessments.

Develop a unified e-training curriculum through collaboration across four countries (Greece, Republic of North Macedonia, Belgium & Spain), leveraging insights from simulations (Discussion Exercises) to address existing gaps.

Create an accessible e-platform, enabling training modules and fostering a community of learners.

Innovate simulation scenarios collaboratively across diverse professional backgrounds and countries, enriching the knowledge database.

Overcome resource availability challenges by sharing existing installations among Project participants, fostering on-site and distance learning opportunities.

Promote and integrate a successful training model for widespread use and adoption.

Partners: The partnership comprises eight partners from four countries, including universities, training organizations specializing in civil protection, municipalities, non-profit research organizations, and technical consulting service companies. Additionally, twelve associated Partners recognize the project’s potential in structured knowledge sharing and fostering collaboration between practitioners, civil society, and stakeholders in disaster management. They express their interest and intention to actively engage and support the SETOFF initiative.

ORIENTATION OF THE CONFERENCE:

The SETOFF Final Conference will deploy in a theoretical orientation that will comprise enlightening keynote speeches and thought-provoking panel discussions featuring experts in their respective fields ; the practical orientation, where concise presentations will display Intellectual Outputs by collaborating partners as well as online demonstrations of simulation scenarios and remote-control applications, alongside with presentations of compelling case studies and the innovative E-platform. We also aspire to encounter participant testimonials and delve into related events and Social Media highlights that complement our thematic discussions. Participants will gain insights into SETOFF results, fostering discussions on integrating and promoting such initiatives within the VET sector and civil protection community.

Audience Profile:
Our audience includes, indicatively but not exclusively, professionals in civil protection and the private sector, encompassing Safety and Security personnel, First Responders, career officers, and representatives from city administrations. Additionally, Vocational Educational Training providers, IT companies, and individuals seeking enhanced skills for career mobility will find this conference useful. We also welcome volunteers eager to expand their skill sets, along with policymakers keen on shaping future strategies.

Given that each one of the Abstracts will be included in the Abstracts’ issue of the Conference exactly as submitted, authors are kindly requested follow the instructions accurately.

-Additional Instructions:

The whole abstract text must not exceed 2 pages including bibliographic references and should be written in single space. Greek language should be used.

Authors’ names should be in lowercase letters, first and last name, e.g. Michail Chalaris.

The name of the author that will present the paper should be in bold, e.g. Michail Chalaris. In the text, after authors’ names, affiliation of each author should be noted as follows: Nikos Nikolaou¹, Ioannis Antoniou²

General Notes

Each resume must be accompanied by a registration of a member of the writing team
Abstracts submitted after the submission deadline will not be accepted.
Abstracts without results or with the indication “results will be presented” will not be accepted.
Changes – corrections in the works will not be accepted after their submission to the Secretariat of the Conference.
Within five days of receiving the abstract of the work, a confirmation of receipt of the abstract will be sent to the author responsible for the correspondence. In case of non-receipt of the relevant certificate, please contact the Secretariat of the Conference.

Publication of Abstracts

All abstracts accepted at the conference will be published in a online volume with ISSN.

All papers will be evaluated by international scientists before publication.
